al-tashabbuh bi'l-ilah
Similarity to Allah

(Tashabbuh billah). Gaining similarity to Allah. This is synonymous with assuming [the Divine Character Traits].

(Tashabbuh). Becoming similar to. Through assuming [the Divine Character Traits], the slave becomes similar to the one who possesses these traits innately, at the very root of his creation. This is the Holy Prophet Muhammad himself (May the Salutations of Allah be upon him and Peace). The slave has to earn these character traits in order to 'become similar' to Sayyiduna Muhammad al Mustapha, the beautiful model. In assuming the character traits of the Names the slave becomes similar to Allah. It is through this tashabbuh that Allah's friends have the power to perform miracles. However, the Great Friends preserve perfect spiritual courtesy towards Allah and cling to their slavehood instead of manifesting miracles. The highest form of spiritual realization to which a friend of Allah can attain is that of the Life of the Senses. This is the seventh sense where all of his senses are totally spiritualized.
