Abandoning of examination

(Tark al Muraqabah). The knowers of Allah have abandoned examination because they know that 'Nothing is like Unto Him' and no knowledge of Allah provides any

positive quality. Examination and concentration (muraqabah) form a decisive part of the struggle in the initial stages of the Spiritual Journey, but as the heart becomes

purified and filled with awe, bewilderment and wonder, the knower surrenders. "Nothing is like Unto Him" (The Qur'an 42:11).

Abaser, The

(Al Mudhill). The Abaser. One of the Beautiful Names of Allah.

Abiding after annihilation

(Baqa ba'da-l fana). Eternity or perpetuity after extinction. This is abiding after passing away. The knower abides in Allah and yet goes out towards creation with love,

generosity, honour and dignity. Abiding after annihilation is for the Perfect Man who has work to do in the world with guiding and perfecting the still imperfect ones. If there

is no work to be done Allah keeps His slave with Himself in the Station of stations.

Abiding in Allah

(Baqa). Subsistence with Allah for perpetuity. After the stage of annihilation in Allah, Allah either keeps His slave in this Station of stations or He sends him back to the

world to perfect the still imperfect ones. Abiding is the slave's return to humanity in the robes of honour. Now he sees Allah established in everything and at all times.

Baqa' corresponds to the third and final stage of 'self-annihilation'. This is the condition of the Slave and the Friend.

Ablution

(Wudhu). This is the ritual ablution that all Muslims perform before entering the prayer and is unique to Islam. The literal meaning of the word ('Wu-dhu') is 'to turn on the

light'. This 'turning on the light' is the first step to entering the room. The Holy Prophet said "On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be known from the traces of

ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so". By performing the ablution in the proper manner, one increases his radiance and illumination

(Dhu'), thus becoming 'light upon light'.

Abode

(Mawtin) is that place where the traveller takes up his residence. He is content and fulfilled and has no desire to continue travelling further.
